Shops for the elite

Duty free shops for a limited number of people will open at the end of August this year. To implement this congenial idea, the Russian government issued a special decree.

In order to buy goods in such a store, you must present accreditation from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation. Special stores will sell for dollars, euros and Russian rubles.

Diplomats and members of their families will be able to shop in stores, access to the store will be closed to other citizens. Thus, a group of privileged persons appears in Russia.

Recall that the first president of Russia Boris Yeltsin 30 years ago built his election campaign under the slogan of fighting privileges.

Russia is becoming more and more like the late Soviet Union under Leonid Brezhnev, there are only a few touches left for the picture of USSR 2.0 to be completed, and given Dmitry Medvedev’s recent opus on Russian historical lands in Georgia and Kazakhstan, the approach of totalitarianism in Russia is felt more and more clearly.

In the USSR, there were also specialized stores for the elite. These shops were called ‘Beryozka’ and it was impossible to buy goods for rubles in them. These stores accepted special checks that only privileged persons could receive.
