After 48 hours at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, radiation will be released from the storage of spent nuclear fuel.
As a result of the hostilities, the power transmission line that provides electricity to the cooling pumps was damaged.
In the storage of spent nuclear fuel there are about 20 thousand spent fuel assemblies. They need constant cooling. This is possible only if there is a power supply.
Director of the Chernobyl NPP Valery Seida handed over a note to the media:
Diesel fuel will last only 48 hours. After that, control over nuclear-hazardous facilities will be completely lost. According to information from the dispatch center, the cause of the de-energizing is the breakthrough of the power line, the place of the breakthrough is still unknown. To restore electricity supply, it is urgent to provide corridors for repair crews
